About Living and Working in Mauritius
Ways for a person and his/her dependants to be granted the right to live and/or work in Mauritius?
Currently there are 3 routes for the above namely:
Occupation Permit
An Occupation Permit is defined by the Mauritius Government as, “a permit which allows an eligible non-citizen to live and work in Mauritius for a period of 3 years.” An Occupation Permit is valid for a period of 3 years or for the period specified in the employment contract (in the event the person applies under the Professional category), whichever is the lesser.
There are 3 ways in which a person can register to be eligible for an Occupation Permit:
- Investor
- Self Employed
- Professional
Retirees
As of January 2008, a Retiree must remit the equivalent of USD 40,000 into Mauritius annually yo be eligible to be granted a Residence Permit.
Residence Permit for Dependants
The non-citizen dependants of a holder of an Occupation Permit or a person of Retiree status may apply for a Residence Permit, which will enable them to live in Mauritius for up to three years.
Permanent Residency for Non-Citizens Holding an Occupation Permit
A Permanent Residence Permit, which is valid for 10 years, may be applied for after a non-citizen has been in possession of an Occupation Permit or a Residence Permit (in the case of dependants and Retirees) for three years if he/she meets the criteria.
Citizenship
Only the Prime Minister can grant citizenship to a non-Mauritian, and although a generally accepted minimum requirement is that the applicant has to have resided in Mauritius for at least five years, there are no guidelines by law and therefore no specific period for time after which citizenship is awarded.
